The Mind, Body, and Breath Connection - Access Healing from the Inside Out

Breathing isn't something people usually talk about… Like how people don't normally chat about the beating of our heart or the digesting of food… It's an automatic process that most people don't usually pay attention to.

Breathing is an essential bodily function often taken for granted, it holds an intriguing secret: unlike automatic processes like digestion and heartbeats, we can consciously control our breath. This unique ability to intentionally alter our breathing patterns presents a remarkable opportunity— one that can reshape our wellbeing.

Speaking of personal experiences, allow me to share a time when this discovery became a lifeline for me.

In the tapestry of our lives, moments of change often arise unexpectedly and at times in ways we never quite anticipated. These moments are crossroads - opportunities to redefine our journey and reshape the story we have playing out in our lives…

My fork in the road moment changed my life forever!

I chose to say goodbye to the self destructive lifestyle I was living which led me to discovering the transformational field of breathwork.

I stopped drinking, stopped eating junk food and left the toxic relationships and completely disconnected myself from everything that held me to that old way of living.

It was a dark time of my life which was full of many trials and tribulations….

Joseph Campbell called it "the dark night of the soul," but for me, it was more like six months of overcoming my inner demons.

As I released the grip of those old suppressive habits, all the things I was trying to bury and avoid feeling for so many years came to the surface.

It was a vulnerable and raw period of my life as I confronted and let go of emotional memories and traumas from my past. I felt lost, disconnected from my purpose and unsupported by the world around me… I felt alone.

In the middle of this emotional storm, I began to notice the subtle changes in my breath and the patterns began to emerge. During moments of stress and anxiety, I felt my breathing become shallow and constricted… my heart rate quickened, and my mind began racing… leaving me feeling overwhelmed.

My curiosity led me to discovering the simple yet potent practice of "box breathing”, a breathwork technique used by Navy Seals, CEO’s executives to regain composure and calmness in high stress environments.

My first exposure to breathwork was a revelation—it worked!

The more I practiced intentional breathwork, the more I felt its impact on my mental and emotional state. It was as if I had unlocked a secret doorway within myself, one that held the key to my own self discovery and transformation.

As I delved deeper into the world of breathwork, I realised that this profound tool had the potential to shift not only my mental and emotional state but also my entire outlook on life. It became clear that breathwork had the power to unlock our inner potential and promote self exploration and wellbeing from within.

I found myself drawn to learn more. I discovered that breathwork wasn't confined to the spiritual realms; it had been embraced by modern science as well.

Researchers were uncovering the intricate dance between our breath, emotions, and brain function—a dance that held the potential to reshape our mental and emotional landscapes. Breathwork wasn't just a tool; it was an entire world waiting to be explored.

These moments of choice, where I faced my struggles head-on, led me to uncover the incredible power of breathwork.

What began as a journey to health and wellbeing from within has evolved into a commitment to share this transformative gift with others.

It's a calling that guides me to writing this blog, where we embark on a shared exploration of breathwork—a practice that bridges ancient wisdom and modern understanding.

As we venture into the realm of breathwork, we'll uncover its science, its history, and its applications. We'll learn how the simple act of breathing consciously can unlock our potential for emotional regulation, mental clarity, and holistic well-being.

This is an invitation to journey within, to discover the untapped reservoirs of your own vitality and resilience through breathwork.

Welcome to a world where the rhythm of our breath becomes a powerful guide, and where the act of breathing itself becomes a catalyst for transformation.

Alarming Statistics

According to the World Health Organization, depression is now the leading cause of disability worldwide. In 2016 they stated depression and anxiety will become the number one disability in 2020.

In 2019, 1 in every 8 people, or 970 million people around the world, were living with a mental disorder, with anxiety and depressive disorders being the most common. The number of people living with anxiety and depressive disorders rose significantly in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, with a 26% and 28% increase respectively in just one year.

And based on information from the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, in 2021-22:

  • 44.4 Million Mental health related medications were dispensed

  • 4.7 million people (18% of Australians) filled a mental health related prescription

  • 85% or mental healh related prescriptions dispensed were prescribed by GPs

  • 74% of mental health related prescriptions were for antidepressant medications.

The statistics are alarming, and it's evident that we need effective tools for self-development and well-being. Fortunately, breathwork, an ancient practice with roots in various spiritual traditions, has emerged as a powerful tool for accessing wellbeing from within.

The Science Behind Breathwork

As I delved deeper into breathwork, I found out that this ancient practice, valued by spiritual traditions for ages, is now being recognized and measured by modern science.

While the art of breathwork may seem mysterious, science is now shedding light on its powerful effects on the mind and body. Research shows that when we breathe with purpose, it can have a remarkable impact on our brain function.

When we take slow, intentional breaths, we activate a part of our nervous system that helps us feel relaxed and less stressed - this is known as our Parasympathetic Nervous System (PNS)

This triggers a chain reaction in our body, including a slower heart rate, less stress hormones in our blood, and more relaxed muscles. It's like flipping a switch that helps us feel calmer.

Moreover, studies have found that special breathing techniques can change the way our brain works. By controlling our breath, we can access parts of our brain that usually work on their own, which can lead to better focus, calmness, and emotional control.

This means that the way we breathe can actually change how we feel and think. It's like a secret key to unlocking our potential that ancient cultures have known for a long time.

Understanding how breathwork affects the brain is fascinating for researchers and practitioners alike. As case studies and stories of client transformations keep coming in, it's clear just how powerful the intentional act of breathing can be.

The Breathwork Journey: From Ancient Traditions to Modern Practices

The more we delve into the scientific aspects of breathwork, we uncover a profound connection between ancient wisdom and modern understanding.

Our exploration of the brain's response to intentional breathing sheds new light on practices that have been revered for centuries. What sages and shamans in ancient cultures believed about the transformative power of breath, modern science now confirms.

It's a convergence of knowledge that illuminates the path to well-being in ways that bridge the gap between past and present.

From the ancient practices of yogic pranayama to the nuanced techniques of contemporary breathwork, the thread of intentional breathing weaves through cultures and generations.

As our understanding of the brain's plasticity deepens, we're realising that these practices aren't just ancient rituals; they're potent tools for dealing with trauma and reprogramming the mind and body.

Even government agencies and websites, such as Open Arms - Veterans & Families Counselling and the Department of Veterans Affairs, acknowledge the efficacy of breathwork in helping individuals overcome PTSD and manage stress.

More than just a tool for handling day-to-day stress, breathwork can be a potent resource not only for veterans but for civilians as well, who have experienced traumatic events.

The breath, which has always been accessible and intimate, is now becoming a bridge between realms of self-discovery, emotional regulation, and physical vitality.

In recent decades, as global interest in holistic well-being and complementary alternative modalities has surged, breathwork has experienced a renaissance. Modern practitioners and researchers have revived and refined ancient techniques, adapting them to contemporary lifestyles and incorporating scientific understanding.

As we navigate an increasingly connected yet distressing and distracting world… breathwork stands as an embodiment of the synergy between ancient wisdom and modern insight—a bridge that offers movement towards happiness, a lifeline to wellbeing, and a pathway to a greater quality of life.

Breathwork and the Nervous System: Finding Balance Within

To truly grasp the profound impact of breathwork on our well-being, we must understand its connection to the nervous system—the delicate network that governs our bodily functions and emotional responses.

Our nervous system can be divided into two branches: the sympathetic nervous system (SNS) and the parasympathetic nervous system (PSN).

The sympathetic nervous system is often referred to as the "fight-or-flight" response, triggered in moments of stress or danger. It prepares our bodies to confront threats, mobilising resources for immediate action.

When the SNS is activated, our heart rate increases, breathing becomes rapid and shallow, and stress hormones flood our bloodstream. In today's fast-paced world, we frequently find ourselves caught in the grip of the SNS, perpetuating the cycle of stress and anxiety.

On the other hand, the parasympathetic nervous system is responsible for promoting relaxation, rest, and rejuvenation. It is often referred to as the "rest-and-digest" response. When the PSN is engaged, our heart rate slows down, breathing deepens and slows, and the body focuses on replenishing energy stores, fostering a state of calmness and well-being.

Breathwork acts as a bridge between these two branches of the nervous system, allowing us to tap into the power of conscious breathing to shift from the grip of the SNS to the calm embrace of the PSN.

By engaging in intentional and rhythmic breathing practices, we activate the PSN and initiate a cascade of physiological changes that promote relaxation and emotional resilience.

The connection between breath and emotions is intriguing. In socially conditioned ways, we often suppress emotions, leading to stress and tension within ourselves. Breathwork can become a powerful tool for navigating and releasing these suppressed emotions, limiting beliefs, and unresolved traumas.
