Your Body Keeps The Score - Creating Remembered Wellness

In the tapestry of life, there exists an innate wisdom that transcends time and space, woven through every cell, emotion, and experience.

This wisdom is the essence of ancient concepts that speaks to the profound connection between our bodies, minds, and the world around us.

It's a connection that whispers to us through the symphony of our breath, inviting us to explore the depths of our being, to grow, and to rediscover a state of wholeness.

In a world where the pursuit of wellness has taken on various forms, from physical fitness to mental health, the holistic approach is gaining momentum. People are seeking solutions that address all aspects of their well-being, recognising that the intricate connection the between body, mind, and spirit.

This shift towards holistic practices reflects a growing understanding that we are more than the sum of our parts.

A Growing Interest in Holistic Wellbeing

In recent years, there has been a remarkable resurgence of interest in holistic practices, and for good reason. As modern life becomes increasingly complex, fast-paced, and technology-driven, people are recognising the need to reconnect with their own internal rhythms and the rhythms of the natural world.

Breathwork has emerged as a powerful and accessible tool for transformation. It is a universal practice—available to anyone, anywhere, at any time and it’s right under our noses...

The Unsettling Prevalence of Trauma

Trauma, whether stemming from past experiences or ongoing challenges, can cast a long shadow on our well-being.

Its effects ripple through our lives, impacting relationships, mental health, physical health, and even our sense of self. Trauma is not only caused from catastrophic events; it can be the accumulation of seemingly small wounds that shape the way we navigate the world.

The troubling truth is that trauma is more common than we might realise and exists on a spectrum, affecting individuals from all walks of life. From the soldier scarred by the battlefield to the child navigating a challenging upbringing, trauma leaves its mark. It's a silent companion that often goes unrecognised, driving behaviour, shaping perceptions, and holding us captive in patterns and beliefs that no longer serve us.

The Transformative Potential of Breathwork

Breathwork is not a panacea, but it is a catalyst for transformation. It's a practice that empowers people to become active participants in their self-development journey.

By practicing conscious breathing, we reclaim agency over our bodies and emotions. We step out of the role of passive recipients of trauma and step into the role of alchemists, transforming pain into growth, and incoherence into harmony.

The rhythmic inhale and exhale, often taken for granted, becomes a gateway to understanding the profound interplay between our physical sensations, emotional landscapes, and cognitive processes.

Breath, in its essence, is both primal and profound. Ancient spiritual traditions recognised its significance as a conduit for life force, chi, prana, or vital energy. The breath was viewed not merely a biological function but a sacred vehicle that carried the essence of existence.

Today, modern science converges with this ancient wisdom, revealing that the breath is indeed a portal to the autonomic nervous system, the seat of our fight-or-flight responses as well as our rest-and-digest states.

Neuro-scientific research demonstrates how the power of conscious breathing can influence the way our brain functions, impacting our emotional regulation, cognitive clarity, and overall well-being.

Breath and the Symphony of Emotion

Take a moment to breathe. Breathe in the air that surrounds you, that fills your lungs, that keeps you alive. But did you know that the way you breathe can orchestrate the very emotions you experience?

The lungs, communicate with your brain through a dance of messages being sent along the vagal nerves. Depending on your breathing rhythm, your brain releases a cascade of neurochemicals that translate into the felt sense of emotion.

If the mother experiences stress, fear, or anxiety, her body releases stress hormones that can permeate the placental barrier, influencing the developing child's hormonal balance. This early exposure to maternal emotional states can lay the groundwork for how the child's own stress response system develops, potentially shaping their emotional resilience or vulnerability in the face of life's challenges.

Dr. Bruce Lipton, the godfather of epigenetics, hinted at something very important in his book “The Biology of Belief” where he said, “It’s the environment, stupid.”

By studying cells under a microscope, he discovered that it's both the environment and the perception of the environment which causes cells to behave differently in relation to the environmental circumstances.

This understanding draws a very important link back to the baby being developed in its mother's womb.

Everything the mother consumes, whether in the form of food, drink, skin products, TV, music, as well as the emotions she feels in relation to what's going on around her, creates the environment for her baby developing in the womb.

Her emotions become her baby's emotions…

Emotional Blueprint: The Foundation of Attachment

As the foetus grows, the surrounding environment becomes not only a source of nourishment but also a blueprint for emotional connections. The developing nervous system begins to process not only the physical sensations of the womb but also the emotional frequencies that flow through it. The mother's laughter, her tears, her moments of calm or distress—all of these contribute to an emotional symphony that shapes the child's emotional landscape.

This prenatal emotional blueprint prepares the baby for the outside world it is going to be born into and can set the stage for how the child forms attachments in the world.

If the mother's environment is one of safety and love, the child may develop a secure attachment style—confident in the availability of emotional support. However, if the environment is stressful, traumatic or unstable, the child may form anxious or avoidant attachment patterns, impacting their ability to trust and connect with others throughout life.

It’s nature's way of preparing the baby for the environment that they'll be born into, and this is where learning begins.

Nature's Curriculum: Preparing for the World

The cues provided during gestation become the foundation for understanding and interacting with the world. The baby's earliest experiences of comfort, stress, and connection are informed by the emotional environment they've already begun to know.

Imagine a scenario where a pregnant mother frequently experiences moments of joy, soothing music, and harmonious relationships. In this environment, the baby's nervous system becomes accustomed to patterns of calmness and safety. As the baby enters the world, they may exhibit a greater capacity for self-regulation, quicker recovery from stress, and a more resilient nervous system.

Learning Through Experience

And so we're brought into this world with the downloaded information we've received throughout gestation, but what happens next?

We keep learning!

Every experience, every touch, every gentle moment, every time we get hurt, every time we don't receive love is teaching us about our environment and what we need to do to feel safe or move towards love.

Imagine it as simply as this: Imagine being a small toddler walking into the kitchen to where your mother has just been cooking a delicious lunch. Being a curious toddler, you climb up on a chair and think it’s a good idea to touch the hotplate… and all of a sudden you get burnt.

It hurts, you cry, you want comfort… yet in that moment, you also learned something. 'If I touch that black thing mom just cooked on, it equals pain.'

This forms as a memory within the nervous system and helps you in the future by not making the same decision again. New neural connections are formed which then create your internal map of the environment around you.

However within the breathwork and transformational work I facilitate, clients can create instant changes to their internal map. This means that they can create new neural connections within their minds that make the old patterns of thinking and breathing obsolete.

And then through conscious awareness practices and proper integration, they can continually move toward a remembered sense of wellness which overrides the old patterns of pain and trauma.

Understanding Trauma and Its Effects

Dr Gabor Maté says trauma is not what happens to you, it's what happens in side you… it's the body's response to a deeply distressing or disturbing event.

Think of a car accident, where a concussion is sustained. The accident itself is the event that occurred, but the injury is what lasts. Similarly, trauma represents a psychological injury that embeds itself within our nervous system, body and mind, extending far beyond the initial incident.

It forms a complex web of challenges, encompassing not only the injury itself but also the burdens that our wounded state inflicts on both our body and mind. This encompasses the unresolved emotions, the coping mechanisms we adopt, and the narratives – whether tragic, melodramatic, or neurotic – that we unknowingly yet inevitably play out.

Breathwork serves the process of releasing stuck and stagnant energy in the body produced by trauma

  • By releasing tension in the body – Trauma can make you tense up without even knowing it. You can experience pain in the back, neck, or shoulders without any injuries. Breathwork can help release tension in your muscles by increasing blood flow and releasing endorphins. Also, when you reduce stress in the present moment by breathing deeply, emotional aches and pains tend to get better.

  • By blocking your inner critic – When we practice breathwork, the self-critical and judgemental part of our brains temporarily shuts up. The result? Feelings start coming out, because the censorship is no longer there. You may find yourself crying out all the stuff you’ve kept buried inside. You may shake or laugh. It doesn’t matter. The important thing is you’re letting it out. That’s the only way to process emotions. You can't think them away. You have to FEEL them.

Unveiling the Connection: Body-Mind-Energy

The interplay between the body, mind, and energy is a complex web of connections. Trauma, whether physical, mental or emotional, disrupts this intricate flow, leading to blockages and imbalances. Breathwork, especially when approached with mindfulness and intention, serves as a key to unlocking and unblocking these energetic channels.

Holotropic breathwork, as introduced by Stanislav Grof, embodies the concept of inner intelligence guiding healing. This approach isn't confined by strict instructions; instead, it encourages individuals to explore their inner realms autonomously. This mirrors the wisdom of ancient societies that recognised the power of breath in connecting psyche, spirit, and cosmos.

Breathwork in Practice: From Theory to Transformation

Embarking on a breathwork journey involves more than the act of breathing—it's about awakening the body's memory and allowing experiences to flow. As you engage in conscious breathing, be attentive to the sensations, emotions, and memories that emerge.

The process might involve moments that surprise you – maybe you might be like be on my first rebirthing experience and find yourself laughing or instead you might cry, or you may sense the release of emotions you didn't even realise were there. This is the body's way of saying, "I'm ready to let go."

With each intentional breath, you create a pathway to emotional freedom. So, as you step into the realm of breathwork, remember that it's a journey of discovery, growth, and ultimately, a profound evolution of your inner self.

Breathwork as a Daily Practice

While dedicated breathwork sessions are transformative, integrating conscious breathing into daily life integrates it even further...

Imagine this: you're in the midst of a busy day, tasks and deadlines looming over you. Instead of letting stress take the wheel, you can decide to reclaim control. Whenever you feel the pressure building up, take a mindful break...

Close your eyes if you can, or simply find a quiet corner to focus on slow deep breathing practices like Box Breathing or Universal Breathing.

These practices prevent stress from accumulating and supports your ability to remain present and centered in the moment and by infusing these breathwork techniques into your daily routine, you're not just managing stress – you're mastering it.

Conclusion: Crafting Your Symphony of Wellness

The practice of breathwork serves as a powerful bridge connecting your past and present, providing you with the tools to reshape the story you tell yourself.

By embracing your body's innate wisdom and engaging in conscious breathwork, you're taking significant steps towards reclaiming your sense of health and wellbeing. Just as musicians practice to create beautiful melodies, you too can practice the art of breathwork to compose a symphony of transformation within yourself.
